BLACK AND MINORITY ETHNIC YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROJECT (BMEYPP)

Work In Schools

Members of the BMEYPP stated that they wanted safe spaces in schools where they can talk about some of their experiences and get support, particularly on issues of racism and bullying. The BMEYPP has set up support groups in some of the local secondary schools. The groups take place during the school day, and the young people meet in a group, facilitated by BMEYPP staff.

What we have done:

We have played games, and ice breakers

We have had discussions about issues such as identity, black history, stereotypes, what is race and racism?

We have shared our experiences of racism and talked about how to deal with it.

We have talked about our rights, schools policies and what we should do when racist incidents happen

We have made films to show to other pupils and adults in school about our experiences

We have also taken part in cultural activities such as African drumming and performed to our school friends and teachers.

"I have been able to talk about some of my experiences, what's happened to me in my life and racism that has happened and it has been taken seriously and has been listened to." Member of group at Portslade Community College
